About
I would like to start by saying, welcome to the website and thanks for taking the time to stop by and read it - I greatly appreciate it.
When I started the journey, I was 48 years old, married and a dad. I am also employed - not in tech and I am certainly not a career person. But I was someone looking for an interest and something new to do.
I have dabbled a bit with Wix and Squarespace websites, so, I thought to myself - why don't I learn how to make a website myself and go from there. I have often been intriged at this strange colourful text on the computer screens.
Well, now I am going to find out what it's all about.
About the developer's links
When I began my journey to learn HTML and CSS, I used some of the big players in the 'learning to code' space.
But as I progressed further into the journey, I soon discovered that there are so many talented devs willing to help learners like myself progress with tips, tricks and free code.
I couldn't believe that someone was willing to spend their time and effort to build a site to solely help others. As time has gone on, I have become increasing dependent
on these specialists and their websites, CodePens and GigHub repositories.
I am immensly thankful for the time and effort these devs put in to assit my learning and the learning of others. That's why I'd wanted to give something back and because their code deserves to be read and used. I hope the readers of my learning diary will find these links as useful as I have.
About the diary
There are two main reasons why I started the diary:
Firstly, I couldn't find very much information about people's self-taught journey and their route to learning HTML and CSS or an estimated length of time it took them to grasp these skills.
What I did find were websites and developers (young and old) telling me that I should be able to grasp certain skills in x amount of time.
There were a few interviews and brief articles around about self-taught learning and online resources but nothing which was fully documented.
So I thought it would be fun to learn HTML and CSS and to document my learning route for anyone who is considering embarking on the same journey. A journey of an older person who decided to learn HTML and CSS and this is how they did it.
I hope the blog provides a rough indication of how long it took an average older person to learn some basic HTML and CSS, how far they progressed with amount of time invested and what material and resources they used.
Secondly, by setting up and building this blog, I am hoping it will give me some real world experience at designing, building and making a real website go live.
I hope that what I do and how I go about doing it- with all the ups and downs; mistakes and successes- will give confidence or even inspiration to others to set off on a journey of their own and hopefully learn from my mistakes and inefficiencies to improve their learning experience.
Many thanks
